Excerpts from CHAPTER 4 - The Other America

In my reading through the Bible during the year, I found this passage that could well describe gang members.

Listen, my child, to what your father teachers you.
Don't neglect your mother's teaching.
What you learn from them will crown you with grace
And cloth you with honor.
My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!
They may say, "Come and join us. Let's hide and kill someone!
Let's ambush the innocent! Let's swallow them alive as the grave swallows its victims.
Though they are in the prime of their life, they will go down into the pit of death.
And the loot we'll get! We'll fill our houses with all kinds of things!
Come on, throw in your lot with us; we'll split our loot with you."
Don't go along with them, my child! Stay far away from their paths.
They rush to commit crimes. They hurry to commit murder.
When a bird sees a trap being set, it stays away. But not these people!
They set an ambush for themselves; they booby trap their own lives!
Such is the fate of those who pursue illegal gain. It ends up robbing them of life.

Proverbs 1:8-19

But what happens when you are the one who is being neglected? Do you listen to your father or, more likely, your mother's boyfriend when he teaches you to steal cars? Should you heed your mother's teaching on how to shoplift and do drugs? What you learn from them will crown you with disgrace and clothe you with dishonor. If you neglect their teaching, as well you should, whom do you listen to?
