Finding a job. Getting the job. Keeping the job without getting fired.
That's hard to do these days, so we want to help you succeed in all of the above!
So check out our FOUR STEPS TO GETTING-- AND KEEPING-- A JOB:
STEP #1: Look Your Best
Clean clothes
Clean shave
Hair combed; no ponytails
No earrings
Regular shoes; no sandals
Nice shirt and pants
STEP #2: Have A Good Attitude
Speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard. Don't worry about your language skills-- just do your best.
SMILE.
Be yourself. You don't want them to hire who you're pretending to be.
STEP #3: Be Prepared
Take two forms of identification (Social Security Card and Driver's License or two other forms of photo identification).
Be ready to ask a question about the company (ask your counselor in advance if you need help). Sample: What opportunities are there for advancement in this company?
Have in your mind what position you are applying for (ask your counselor in advance) Bad Example: "I can do anything" or "I'll take whatever is available." Better: "I am willing to learn."
Bring addresses and phone numbers of previous employers if you have any.
Employers sometimes ask, "Tell me about yourself," or "What would you like to be doing five years from now?" Have a brief answer ready.
STEP #4: Be Truthful
No previous employment is better than lying about it.
Be honest about drugs (they will probably test and find out anyway - tests don't make mistakes).
If the application asks about conviction for a felony, be honest. Never mislead an employer.
Take responsibility for your past. Avoid phrases like "they didn't…", "the job was boring." Rather say, "I'm changing and learning and am ready to do a good job here."
