Excerpts from CHAPTER 3 - Jesus Is Up Ahead


       Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes

From the beginning, it was obvious that Jesus was up ahead saying, "Follow me." He wept over these young men more than I did. He was not afraid of them, had not abandoned them and had revealed a plan for them. One of the first verses that I came across after God used Isaiah 61:1-3 to call me was Psalm 68:5: "A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows (single mothers), is God in his holy dwelling." If I were going to follow God, then I too would have to become a father to the fatherless, a protector of single mothers struggling to raise sons with no man around. A few times I have wondered, "Why me?" But even when faced with calamity, my mother taught me to ask, "Why not me?" And here was an opportunity to do something good about a great calamity...
